Website rebuild

Rebuild your slow WordPress site as a fast, AI-discoverable Astro site

TL;DR

A typical Version Zero rebuild takes 3–5 weeks, costs £3,500–£12,000 depending on size, and replaces your current WordPress (or other) site with a fast, secure, AEO-ready Astro site. We migrate your content, preserve your URLs and rankings, and set up everything you need to start ranking in AI search.

Before vs after, on a real client site

What changes when you replace WordPress with Astro. Numbers below are typical for a small business marketing site.

Before — WordPress
Lighthouse Performance 42
LCP (mobile) 4.2s
Page weight 3.8 MB
Schema coverage Partial
After — Astro by Version Zero
Lighthouse Performance 100
LCP (mobile) 0.7s
Page weight 280 KB
Schema coverage Complete

Numbers are typical for a small business marketing site. Your mileage will vary; we'll run a real test on your site as part of the free audit.

Should you rebuild or refresh your website?

Refreshing makes sense when your site is structurally sound but visually dated — same platform, same URLs, new design and content. A rebuild makes sense when the underlying platform is the bottleneck: slow, plugin-heavy WordPress, hand-rolled HTML, or a Wix/Squarespace site that won't ever score well on Lighthouse no matter how good the content is.

If your site loads in over 2.5 seconds on mobile, costs more than £100/month to maintain, hasn't been redesigned in 3+ years, or you've never been cited by an AI search engine, rebuild is almost certainly the right call. The new site will pay for itself in saved maintenance fees alone within the first year.

What does a website rebuild actually involve?

Every Version Zero rebuild follows the same four-stage process: Audit → Plan → Build → Ship. We start by auditing your existing site against Lighthouse, schema validators, and live AI queries. Then we map every URL, content block, and integration into a written rebuild plan that you approve before any code is written.

The build phase replaces your existing site with a brand-new Astro site: new design system, all content migrated, schema baked into every page, llms.txt and llms-full.txt published, sitemap auto-generated. You see staging weekly. At ship, we cut over with 301 redirects, submit the new sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster, and monitor for 30 days.

How long does a website rebuild take?

A standard 8-page Starter Rebuild takes 3 weeks from kickoff to launch. A 20-page Growth Rebuild takes 4–5 weeks. Bespoke rebuilds with ecommerce or custom integrations vary, but most still ship inside 8 weeks. The biggest variable is your responsiveness on content review — projects that wait on client copy slip more than projects with the copy ready upfront.

We work in weekly sprints with a fixed scope and a fixed price. You get a staging URL on day one and updates every Friday. If we're going to miss a deadline, you know about it the week before — never on the day.

What technology will my new site use?

Every rebuild we ship is built on Astro — the framework that consistently scores 100/100 on Lighthouse without tricks. For content management we default to Astro content collections (markdown files in your repo), which keeps the site fast, portable, and free of CMS lock-in. For larger or content-heavy sites we'll deploy Sanity, which gives a clean editor UI without sacrificing performance.

Hosting is on Vercel, with global edge delivery, automatic HTTPS, and instant rollbacks if something breaks. Forms can use Formspree, Web3Forms, or a custom Vercel serverless function — your choice. Analytics defaults to Plausible or Fathom (privacy-respecting, no cookie banner needed) but we can wire up Google Analytics 4 if you've already invested in that ecosystem.

Will I lose my SEO rankings?

No, and this is the most common worry we hear. Rebuilds done badly can absolutely tank rankings — but rebuilds done correctly almost always lift them. We map every existing URL to its new equivalent and put 301 redirects in place at launch. Google understands 301s as 'this content moved here permanently' and transfers ranking signals across.

On top of that, the new site is faster, has better Schema.org coverage, and has a structure AI engines actually understand. We've yet to see a Version Zero rebuild that didn't see organic traffic improve within 90 days of launch. As an extra safeguard, we audit your existing inbound links via Google Search Console *before* the rebuild starts so nothing valuable gets dropped.

Rebuild questions, answered

The questions we hear most often during scoping calls.

What's included in 'content migration'? +
Every page of usable content from your existing site is moved into the new Astro site, structured for AEO and ready to edit. We don't migrate broken or outdated pages — those get flagged in the Plan stage so you can decide whether to rewrite or retire them. Image optimisation (WebP/AVIF, responsive sizes) is included.
Do you write the new copy or do I? +
Either. By default we migrate your existing copy and recommend AEO-friendly restructuring where it'll lift performance. If you want a full content rewrite we can quote that as an add-on, or recommend a specialist copywriter. Most clients do a hybrid — we restructure, they tighten.
Can you migrate my existing blog? +
Yes. WordPress, Ghost, Medium, Substack, and most hand-rolled blogs can be migrated into Astro content collections (or Sanity if you'd rather have a CMS). All posts retain their URLs by default, and the new blog is dramatically faster.
What happens to my email and other services? +
Nothing. We only touch your website. Email (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Fastmail), CRM, helpdesk, and other services remain untouched. We coordinate DNS changes carefully to avoid any email disruption during the cutover.
Do you offer ongoing maintenance? +
Yes — we have a separate AEO Retainer that includes ongoing content production, schema updates, and citation monitoring. For pure technical maintenance (security patches, dependency updates) the Astro stack needs almost none, which is part of the point.
What if I'm not in Greater Manchester? +
We work with marketing-aware clients across the UK and occasionally further afield. The only thing we can't easily offer to remote clients is in-person meetings — everything else (audits, planning sessions, sprint reviews) works perfectly over Loom and Google Meet.
