Emitrics — AI carbon accounting for SMEs
Built and launched Emitrics, an AI-powered carbon accounting platform for SMEs facing tender requirements, PPN compliance, or B Corp certification. Categorises financial transactions into Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions automatically using DEFRA input-output methodology.
The problem
Most carbon accounting solutions either require extensive manual data entry, demand specialised environmental expertise, or come with budgets in the tens of thousands of pounds. SMEs facing tender requirements like PPN compliance or B Corp certification are caught in a gap — enterprise platforms are overkill, and basic calculators lack the credibility procurement teams need.
The result: hundreds of small businesses paying for compliance work they could be doing in-house if the tooling existed.
The solution
Emitrics analyses the financial data SMEs already have. AI-powered categorisation maps each transaction to the right emissions factor using DEFRA input-output methodology, calculating Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions automatically from day one.
The platform is built around progressive refinement: start with available financial data, then improve accuracy over time by overriding with supplier-specific factors as the business gathers them. Reports are PPN- and B Corp-ready out of the box.
What was shipped
- AI-powered transaction categorisation across the full chart of accounts
- Comprehensive Scope 1, 2 & 3 tracking with DEFRA input-output factors
- Progressive data refinement (start broad, get specific over time)
- PPN-compliant emissions report exports
- Multi-tenant SaaS with Stripe billing
Outcome
Emitrics is live at emitrics.com with paying customers. The full platform shipped in eight weeks from initial kickoff through to a live, billing product.
What we’d do differently
If we shipped Emitrics today, we’d build it on Astro for the marketing site (with full AEO baseline) and keep Next.js only for the authenticated app. The marketing site is now the bottleneck on growth — exactly the kind of rebuild Version Zero now does for clients.
